New Shoots Children’s Centre, Whenuapai
The New Shoots Childrens Centre, located in Whenuapai, has been designed with a collaborative approach between architect, engineer and builder, resulting in an innovative use of timber to create a playful and vibrant Early Learning Centre in a growing residential development north-west of Auckland, New Zealand.
The centre caters for 90 children, and features spacious, open-plan classrooms that connect directly to outdoor playgrounds. Extensive glazing fills the centre with natural daylight and facilitates natural ventilation.
Low VOC materials have also been used, ensuring a healthy environment is maintained throughout the centre for both staff and children.
A highlight of the centre is the twisting timber walkway which leads people along the building to the entrance. Glulam beams have been used to create is a dynamic framed deck that connects indoor classrooms with the playground outside. The design is a playful take on the classic childrens game of hide and seek, where the revolving glulam structure creates spaces in which children can play, hide and explore.
