Project Description

Giraffe Early Learning Centre

Situated in the bustling residential centre of Mount Albert, Giraffe Early Learning Centre is an ingenious utilisation of limited space, capturing the demand for childcare within a busy residential catchment. Accommodating for 110 children aged 0-6, the purpose-built childcare centre combines the best of high-quality architectural design and modern facilities to create a point of difference in the surrounding neighbourhood.

Aligning with the projects vision, the centre is inspired by nature and rare wildlife characteristics, particularly the giraffe. Incorporating themes of the natural throughout the four classrooms and outdoor play spaces the design acts as a medium to develop children’s independence and curiosity, where they can naturally discover and grow.

Internally the classrooms and playgrounds are arranged across the two floors with sizeable zones, linked with seamless indoor and outdoor flow. Each classroom connects to the luscious outdoor playground where growing foliage is draped around to attract insects and birds, while purifying the air for a healthy environment.

Employing a simplistic material palette, the soothing colour scheme creates a sense of harmony and softness within the learning spaces, where natural plywood products are neatly integrated with custom designed cabinetry to mimic natural elements.  Autex panels are featured as playful treetops, to help fine tune children’s motor skills and feed their curiosity.

Orientated to maximise nature daylight, the centre incorporates extensive floor to ceiling sliding doors and windows to allow for passive heating, cooling and natural ventilation. Outdoor decking areas are covered to minimise heat and glare, with the upstairs zone carefully sheltered with a natural plant-based canopy.
