Fantails Estate, Dairy Flat

Fantails Estate is the third high-quality childcare centre to be completed by Fantails Childcare – a well-established and highly regarded group of early learning centres located in Northern Auckland. The centre is situated on a sprawling 3.68ha site, catering for 154 children ranging from babies to preschoolers. Framed by paddocks, animals and trees, this early learning centre strikes a balance between start-of-the-art, modern educational spaces and the best of rural New Zealand.

At the end of a winding, estate-like driveway, the centre sits as six individual blocks connected by a geometric timber canopy. Polycarbonate roofing covers the canopy, minimizing excess heat and glare from the sun. The six blocks comprise of five individual classrooms, and a more private staff block including kitchen and laundry facilities and administrative spaces.

Internally, each classroom has been designed to provide children with a more intimate learning environment, featuring facilities that cater for the unique needs of each age group. Custom designed cabinetry and furniture ensure every space has been well-considered, creating a cohesive feel that carries through from the overall architectural form of the building. The design utilizes glazing to maximise views, daylight and natural ventilation to ensure an optimal internal environment quality is maintained year round.

Each classroom has a north-facing outlook to the large playground and countryside setting, with the playground providing children with seven times the minimum area for outdoor play. Deep canopies and covered art benches create sheltered all-weather areas that allow children to play outside in any weather. Rainwater is collected on site to provide the buildings water supply, with blackwater also captured and treated on site.
